This year marks the 20th time that AVEK Audiovisual Centre will present the AVEK Award. The winner for 2023 will be chosen by the Swedish curator Theodor Ringborg, who recently took up the position of director at Konsthall Tornedalen, which is currently under construction.
“Finland has a wonderful and vibrant cultural scene. This responsibility given to me is great and means a lot to me,” remarks Ringborg about his role as the selector of the AVEK Award receiver.
Ringborg, who completed his PhD at Goldsmiths, University of London, has previously worked as artistic director at Bonniers Konsthall in Stockholm. Currently, he is involved in establishing a cultural institution showcasing international visual art at the small village of Risudden in Övertorneå municipality in the Torne Valley.
Ringborg will choose the next winner of the AVEK Award from a shortlist. Compiled based on nominations by experts, the list consists of artists supported by AVEK.
“I’ve been given the opportunity to see so much wonderful work, and the experience has been one of a kind. I have the highest regard for the Finnish audiovisual industry,” says Ringborg.
The AVEK Award is granted to a creator or group that works in media arts or other audiovisual culture. The award is in the amount of EUR 15,000. Past winners of the award include media artist and filmmaker Azar Saiyar (2022), artist Tuomas A. Laitinen (2021) and artist Jenna Sutela (2020), for example. The AVEK Award for 2023 will be presented on 6 September.
