In what situations do I need a copying licence?

As a solo entrepreneur, you can use copyrighted online and printed materials for purposes such as presentations or training materials, or as prompts for AI. Permission is always required to copy, digitally distribute or store copyrighted material. You can request permission directly from the authors and publishers of the materials or obtain a copying licence from Kopiosto. As a solo entrepreneur, you can obtain a licence for consulting activities, training and course activities or even both.

A solo entrepreneur’s licence for consulting activities allows for the legal use of materials in your own work in the following cases, for example:

  • including articles and images in your PowerPoint or Google Slides presentations for consultation sessions
  • carrying out studies, surveys or assessments that include excerpts copied from publications
  • preparing material for a consulting tender in which you use content such as newspaper and magazine articles or images
  • storing a presentation on a closed platform for the duration of a consulting assignment
  • using the copied content for internal idea generation in a closed AI application (e.g. as a source of inspiration).

A solo entrepreneur’s licence for training and course activities allows for the legal use of materials in your own work in the following cases, for example:

  • preparing training materials that include excerpts from books or newspaper and magazine articles.
  • showing copied content over a closed network in the remote, hybrid or online training courses you organise.
  • storing copies on a closed network for a training group to access during a course.
  • making a course recording that includes the copied content that was shown in a training session.

Obtaining a licence

The licence period always changes every calendar year to the new year. You can manage your licence later by logging into the licence store with your credentials.

Obtaining a continuous licence

A licence that is valid until further notice must be updated between 1 November and 31 January, if

  • the amount of the participants for training and course activities changes (the categories are 1–100, 101–200, 201–300 etc.)

If the category does not change the licence will automatically continue as it is.
