Terhi Nieminen’s film presents a northern winter night that is both ordinary and mythical

Filmmaker Terhi Nieminen says she needs to experience the winter that has all but disappeared from her home region in the Arctic Circle due to climate change. In her film ‘Maailman reuna on lähellä’ (‘The Edge of the World is Near’) a journey to the Svalbard Archipelago depicts the mind’s internal pull towards the Earth’s magnetic North Pole. The series of articles presents the creators selected for the Kehittämö programme and their projects.

At Kehittämö, Terhi Nieminen is working on her documentary film ‘Maailman reuna on lähellä’, which is being produced by Markku Tuurna of Filmimaa. Her mentor is Gitte Hansen.

Kehittämö – Talent Development Lab is a development programme by AVEK and the Finnish Cultural Foundation, the aim of which is to strengthen the personal voices of the most talented filmmakers of their generation and create new audiovisual works of the highest quality. Filmmakers selected for the programme receive a €55,000 grant to develop their work, as well as personal mentoring from top international professionals in the field.

Half of the funding for the programme comes from the Finnish Cultural Foundation and half from AVEK’s compensation for private copying. Due to the cut in the compensation funds, AVEK received €150,000 from the Parliament as a so-called Christmas gift, which enabled the implementation of the fourth round of the Kehittämö programme as planned.
