The remunerations were collected from the copying and use licences for television programmes and publications sold by Kopiosto to educational institutions, public administration and businesses. In addition, Kopiosto distributes a compensation for private copying to authors of audiovisual works and performing artists from the appropriations based on the state budget and public lending remunerations to visual artists.
AVEK Audiovisual Centre, a part of Kopiosto, distributed a total of EUR 3.0 million to the Finnish AV culture and creative industries in 2023. AVEK’s funds mainly come from the compensation for private copying. AVEK also supports the creative industries with the DigiDemo and CreaDemo appropriations and the Mediarata special appropriation granted by the Ministry of Education and Culture.
EUR 23 million to the copyright holders of audiovisual works
In 2023, Kopiosto distibuted EUR 23 million to authors of television programmes, performing artists and other copyright holders.
Of this sum, EUR 10.3 million was distributed as personal remuneration. These remunerations have been collected from online recording services of TV programmes, use of works for teaching purposes, the compensation for private copying, and other uses of audiovisual works.
Kopiosto distributed EUR 0.25 million of remunerations from online recording services to its member and sister organisations. The member organisations distribute these remunerations to serve the interests of the authors in their respective fields.
The training fund KOURA was transferred EUR 0.5 million from the remunerations collected from works’ use for teaching purposes, to be distributed to authors and performing artists as various grants and awards.
A total of EUR 2.6 million of remunerations collected from online recording services were transferred to Teosto and Gramex to be distributed to the copyright holders of musical works. The producers’ share, EUR 7.1 million, was transferred to APFI.
A total of EUR 2.3 million were distributed to foreign broadcasting companies, producers and authors for the retransmission of foreign TV channels.
EUR 22 million to the authors and publishers of publications
In 2023, Kopiosto distributed EUR 21.6 million to the authors and publishers of publications. These remunerations have been collected from the photocopying and printing of texts, images and musical notes published in books and magazines, and from the copying of online material.
Kopiosto’s member organisations were distributed EUR 19.7 million. A total of 26 Finnish organisations from different fields of culture and communications received remunerations. Organisations that represent authors will re-distribute the majority of their remunerations as grants. Publishing organisations distribute most of the remunerations they receive to publishers as direct remuneration.
The member organisations also use the copying remunerations distributed to them to fund many awards for culture and communication industries. These awards include, for example, the Finlandia awards for literature, the Nonfiction writers’ award, the Kritiikin kannukset award for creative or performing artist by the Finnish Critics’ Association, the Rudolf Koivu illustrator award, the Vuoden tiedelehti science journal award by the Finnish Association for Scholarly Publishing, and the J. A. Hollo award for best nonfiction translation.
Furthermore, Kopiosto distributed EUR 2.0 million of remunerations collected from the copying of foreign materials to its foreign sister organisations.
EUR 2 million to visual artists as public lending remunerations
Kopiosto distributed a total of EUR 2.3 million to visual artists as public lending remunerations in 2023. Kopiosto is responsible for the public lending remunerations paid to the authors of visual and photographic works for the public lending of their works.
