Kopiosto distributes public lending remunerations to visual artists and e-audiobook narrators

The latest distribution of public lending remunerations and library use remunerations of e-materials to visual artists and e-audiobook narrators is based on lending statistics for 2023.

EUR 2.5 million paid to visual artists as public lending remunerations

This year, we distributed EUR 2.5 million in public lending remunerations to the authors of visual and photographic works for the public lending of their works and the library use of e-materials.

Most of the public lending remunerations paid to visual artists come from borrowed books. Remunerations were paid to the visual artists of approximately 50,000 of the most borrowed books, e-books and e-audiobooks. Together, these publications account for approximately 80% of all loans in public and university libraries in 2023.

Remunerations for e-audiobook narrators paid for the first time

We distributed EUR 70,000 to audiobook narrators for the library use of e-audiobooks. This was the first time that narrators were remunerated. The remunerations cover approximately 4,300 of the most borrowed e-audiobooks, which together account for approximately 90% of all e-audiobook loans in public and university libraries in 2023.

Information on public lending remunerations

Public lending remunerations are copyright remunerations paid to authors for the lending of their works from the library. Remunerations are paid for the loans of physical books from public and university libraries and for the library use of e-books and e-audiobooks.

Remunerations paid by the Ministry of Education and Culture are administered by three copyright organisations, which also distribute the remunerations to the authors. Kopiosto pays public lending remunerations to the authors of visual and photographic works, as well as remunerations for the library use of e-materials to audiobook narrators. Sanasto pays public lending remunerations to authors of literary works and Teosto to authors of musical works.
