Copyright remunerations to authors of TV programmes and performing artists

We pay copyright remunerations to authors and performers of TV programmes when programmes broadcast on free channels are recorded in households or shown in educational institutions, for example.

In most cases, we will receive the names of the persons involved in the production of domestic programmes directly from the production companies. To receive copyright remunerations, you must register for the OmaKopiosto service (available only in Finnish) and provide us with the necessary information for the payment.

Our primary payments take place in September, at which time we pay you for the use of the previous year’s programmes. The remunerations for each year are available for three years. The member organisations of Kopiosto set the principles for the payment of the remunerations on an annual basis.

    How to get copyright remunerations

We pay copyright remunerations to audiovisual authors for the secondary use of their TV programmes, such as private use, online recording and educational use.

Programmes that are broadcast on free TV channels and meet the criteria for the remuneration will accumulate remunerations. We do not pay remuneration for programmes shown on paid channels, streaming services or in cinemas.

Remuneration is paid for specific author roles depending on the type of programme (e.g. film or news). Eligibility for remuneration requires the threshold of originality to be exceeded, i.e. the author must have made a creative contribution to the making of the TV programme.

Remunerations are available to audiovisual authors and performing artists, such as scriptwriters, editors, directors, cinematographers, film editors, set designers, costume designers, illustrators, actors, commentators, translators and sound designers.

The remunerations for creators and performers of music is paid by Teosto and Gramex.

We can only pay remunerations to authors who have provided us with their current personal, tax and banking details. Update your details for reimbursement by registering for OmaKopiosto (available only in Finnish).

Once you have submitted your tax card to us, we will receive it from the Tax Administration. If there are any changes to your tax information during the year, please submit your new tax card to us. We cannot adjust withholding tax afterwards.

You can send us your tax card securely through our uploading service.

Payment of remuneration requires a valid authorisation (AV authors’ copyright agreement / AV Grant of Rights) or a claim for payment. It is important that you grant us authorisation so that we can continue to collect and pay remunerations to authors in the future.

Once you have a valid authorisation, we will always pay you the accrued remunerations automatically. You can provide the authorisation through the authorisation service. Read more about authorisations in the section Kopiosto authorisations.

If you cannot provide an authorisation, you can make a one-off claim for the specific remuneration amount that is currently accrued through OmaKopiosto.

The amount of remuneration for TV programmes varies from year to year, sometimes a great deal. The remunerations accrued for various programmes and their authors will only be determined upon payment. Unfortunately, we cannot estimate in advance the remuneration amount you will receive.

It is important that you check your payment calculation sheet for details of the remunerations paid to you. We can correct any deficiencies or errors afterwards. The payment calculation sheets can be found in OmaKopiosto.

We do not always receive author information for all programmes, in which case you can register as an author yourself. Read more under We are looking for authors of TV programmes.
