Company’s copying licence – a responsible solution for the use of material protected by the Copyright Act
1. You can act responsibly and adhere to the law
It is important to remember that not all material on the internet may be used freely. Most professionally produced text and image content is protected by copyright. In order to use such content, companies need the permission of the content creators and publishers. By purchasing our copying licence, your company will contribute to ensuring that creative industry professionals receive the appropriate remunerations for the use of their works. This means that your company can act responsibly and with respect for copyright – while ensuring that authors and publishers have the chance to create new, high-quality content.
2. Easy to obtain – get your licence with just a few clicks
Your company does not need to go to the trouble of requesting permissions from authors and publishers to copy, distribute or store works for each individual use. We represent a broad range of Finnish and foreign publishers and authors, which is why our copying licence meets the copyright needs of most companies exceptionally well. 3. A global selection of the latest texts, photographs and illustrations for internal use within your company
Through our member organisations, we represent creative professionals, such as journalists, photographers, graphic designers, writers, critics, illustrators, translators and comic artists, as well as publishers. In addition to over 90,000 Finnish authors and publishers who have issued a grant of rights, we represent millions of foreign authors based on our agreements with our sister organisations abroad. The extended collective licence issued by the Ministry of Education and Culture also allows us to cover authors and publishers whom we do not represent directly through the grants of rights issued to us. This allows us to offer your company a comprehensive and secure solution for the use of copyrighted material from all over the world.
4. Comprehensive rights to use works for the needs of your company
Our copying licence allows you to copy and print out texts and images from the internet for work-related purposes, among other things. The licence also allows you to make traditional photocopies and scans of works such as newspaper and magazine articles and parts of other printed materials. You can share different types of copies within your company via channels such as Teams, intranet or email, as well as in paper form as printouts or photocopies. You can also enter copyrighted text and images, or parts thereof, as prompts into your company’s closed AI application for purposes such as searching for information, planning your work and generating summaries and translations for your own use or internal use within your company. Read more about the use of images and text or leveraging of AI allowed by the copying licence in the licence terms. Also see frequently asked questions about the use of AI.
5. You can use texts and images from an unlimited number of works during the period of validity of the licence
As long as the licence terms are respected, you can copy images, articles or other texts from as many works as you wish for the internal use of your company during the validity of the copying licence. The number or type of works you copy does not affect the annual price of the copying licence.
6. Versatile use of works at a reasonable price for your company
The annual price of a company’s copying licence is industry-specific and based on studies conducted in different industries on the use of copyrighted works. The price of the copying licence is also easy to budget for, as it is determined each year according to the number of employees or officers in the company on the first day of the year.
7. You will support Finnish culture and creative work
We pay the copyright remunerations collected as revenue from the sale of copying licences to our member organisations, which distribute them to the authors and publishers in the form of various grants and awards, among other things. More than 90% of the total amount we collect in copyright remunerations is distributed to Finnish authors and publishers. We also distribute remunerations to foreign authors and publishers on the basis of representation agreements between organisations. By obtaining a copying licence, your company supports Finnish culture and the creative industry. The copyright remunerations we collect are used to finance a number of acknowledgements in the creative industries, including the awards of Illustrator of the Year, Science Book of the Year, Warelius Award, J. A. Hollo Award, and Non-fiction Writers’ Award as well as the various Finlandia Prizes for literature.
8. You will avoid any potential penalties for unauthorised use of works
By obtaining a copying licence for your company, you can act responsibly and respect the rights of authors and publishers. Unauthorised copying of works and potential copyright infringement may lead to penalties. Sometimes employees may unwittingly and unintentionally engage in illegal use of copyrighted material if they use such material without the permission of the copyright holder. The financial consequences of even a single copyright infringement are almost without exception higher than the cost of the copying licence.
