Frequently asked questions about av remunerations

Here you will find answers to questions we are frequently asked about copyright remunerations for AV authors.

We pay remunerations for TV programmes to their authors and performers on an annual basis. Our primary payment takes place in September, and the distribution is always based on the usage information of the programmes broadcast in the previous year.

The next payment will take place in September 2025, when we will distribute the remunerations for TV programmes broadcast in 2024.

In addition to this, we pay monthly remunerations that can be paid after incomplete personal details, authorisation details or information on claims for payment have been completed. We are constantly working to complete the information and contact the authors.

The remunerations accrued for various programmes and their authors will only be determined upon payment. Unfortunately, this means that we cannot estimate in advance the remuneration amount you will receive.

Once your remunerations have been paid, you can find your payment calculation sheet in OmaKopiosto. It details the remunerations paid to you for each programme. It is important that you always check the information on the sheet. We can correct any deficiencies or errors afterwards.

In OmaKopiosto, check that your personal and bank details and tax rate are up to date. If your withholding tax information needs updating, send us your valid tax card securely through our uploading service.

For the primary payment distribution in September, you must provide us with your tax card by 31 August.

We also need your authorisation to pay the remunerations. You can grant the authorisation through the authorisation service by providing an AV authors’ copyright agreement or AV Grant of Rights, after which we will pay the remunerations to you automatically in the future. Alternatively, you can make a one-off claim for payment.

If you have not received remunerations from us before, register as our customer through OmaKopiosto and send us your tax card.

The amount of remuneration received by an individual TV programme author varies from year to year. We pay remunerations accrued from TV programmes to authors and performers based on the information that production companies provide about the individuals who participated in the production of the programmes and their contributions. Remunerations are paid for the author roles specified for each type of programme. In order to receive remuneration, you need to make a creative contribution to the making of the TV programme.

Not all TV programmes are eligible for remuneration. Instead, remunerations are only accrued for programmes broadcast on free-to-air channels. The remunerations accrued for the programmes vary from year to year. For example, remunerations are paid for the most recorded programmes, certain types of programmes or certain types of use.

You can read about the programme types eligible for remuneration and how the remunerations are determined on the Bases for AV remunerations page.

Your failure to receive remunerations may also be due to incomplete personal, bank or withholding information. You can easily update your information in OmaKopiosto. To receive remunerations, you must also have a valid AV authors’ copyright agreement or AV Grant of Rights or a claim for payment.

Every year, copyright remunerations are accumulated for TV programmes with insufficient information and cannot be paid. You can search the lists of unknown authors for programmes that have accumulated royalties.

If you think you should receive compensation for a TV programme, you should contact us at tilitys(at)kopiosto.fi. Indicate the name of the programme, the channel and year of broadcasting and your role in making the programme. Please also include your full name in the message. This enables us to check whether the production company has informed us about the programmes you have made.

In OmaKopiosto, you can see the programmes for which you have been marked as an author in our database. On the ‘Omat ohjelmat’ page (‘My programmes’), you can only see the programmes for which you have received or can receive remunerations. Please contact us if you detect any shortcomings or incorrect details concerning remunerations or authors.

There are sometimes deficiencies in the information we receive from production companies about the authors of the programmes. We publish annual lists of unknown authors regarding programmes on which author information is required for the payment of remunerations. If you find programmes you have made on the lists, follow the instructions and register as a programme author.

As the heir of a deceased author or performer, you are entitled to copyright remuneration. We can pay remunerations to heirs once we have been informed of the death of an author or performer and provided with the information necessary for payment. In these cases, please contact us at tilitys(at)kopiosto.fi.

Copyright remunerations are liable to taxation. We receive most of our tax information directly from the Tax Administration. You can check your withholding tax rate provided to us in OmaKopiosto.

When you are receiving remunerations for the first time, or if there are changes to your tax information during the year, please provide us with a new tax card. Pensioners and minors must submit their tax cards every year. We cannot adjust withholding tax afterwards.

If you are a permanent resident of a foreign country, in which case you are under restricted tax liability in Finland, you must submit a tax-at-source report to us. In the event that your restricted tax liability ends, please submit a valid tax card to us.

If you receive copyright remunerations as an heir of the actual author, capital tax will be deducted from the remunerations.
